The Breeze took care of business in Conshohocken PA tonight, 34-18 over the Philadelphia Phoenix, to secure 2nd place in the East and a home playoff game July 16 with one game to spare. In many ways it was the Markham Shofner show. He took the field with an impressive degree of intensity that netted 2 goals, 8 assists, and 2 blocks for a team-leading plus-minus of 9 despite 3 early throwaways. Cutter Chuck Cantone added 6 goals in 14 catches, while David Boylan-Kolchin and Jeff Wodatch added 4 goals each, the latter bringing his total to a team-leading 40 on the season. Brian Marshall and Rowan McDonnell each had 3 blocks to lead the defense.

The Breeze began the game on defense and promptly stormed to a 6-0 lead on six consecutive breaks. They never really looked back from there, trading goals to end the 1st quarter 8-2 and then several more holds with a few breaks made the score 17-7 at halftime. After a quick Phoenix goal to open the 3rd quarter, the Breeze O-line held and then the D-line ran off 3 more breaks to bring the score to 21-8 and essentially put the game away with 18+ minutes remaining.

duke_and_wodatch_croppedRemarkably, the score reached 25-12 before Philadelphia recorded their first break of the game. The Phoenix got turns and had their chances along the way, but it took until the late 3rd quarter before their D-line finally converted. The quarter ended 26-13, and then the Phoenix recorded one more break to open Q4. But the Breeze took care of business from there, winning the final quarter 8-5 to close out the game going away, 34-18.

The Breeze scored on 90% of their offensive points and enjoyed a 64% conversion rate on defense. In all, it added up to the biggest margin of victory in the team’s history, surpassing a 27-12, 15-goal victory over the Phoenix July 10th of last season. The 34 goals scored is also a team record, easily eclipsing the total in their 31-26 victory over the New York Empire back on June 14, 2014.
