[UPDATED 5/23] The Breeze took advantage of strong home support despite the difficult weather conditions, and the chance to meet the Montréal Royal at the tail end of a tough two-game road trip, to take control of the game early and win in convincing fashion, 28-14. This makes the 5th win in a row for the Breeze, bringing the season tally to 6-2 just past the halfway point of the 14-game season. The Breeze face the Royal again in Montréal this Saturday, followed by a Sunday matinee at Ottawa before returning home for a much anticipated Saturday evening matchup against Toronto June 4.
Goose Helton and David Cranston shared top goal honors yesterday with 4 apiece, while Markham Shofner led the team in assists with 4. Shofner was named by MVP by the Royal after the game, while Miguel Goderre in turn was named the Montréal MVP by the Breeze in what will hopefully be a new Breeze tradition: the two teams lined up immediately after the game to announce each other’s biggest contributors, and then the winners signed game discs and threw them into the crowd.
Handler Alan Kolick excelled on both sides of the disc today, leading the team in Ds with 3 while accounting for 2 goals and 3 assists and no turns, giving him a team leading Plus-Minus of 8. But as usual this season it was a full team effort: for instance Brian Marshall, Jeff Wodatch, Rowan McDonnell, Russ Howd and Shofner all registering 2 Ds on the day.
All in all it was a great day for the Breeze faithful in the rainy weather, and the Breeze now sit 6-2 in control of their own destiny for at least a 2nd place finish and coveted playoff spot.
