Fresh off our historic victory over Division leaders Toronto Rush last weekend, the Breeze now face a must-win game against 3rd place New York Empire to remain in pole position for a 2nd place finish and coveted home playoff game. The Saturday, June 11, 6:30pm game here at Gallaudet University will be broadcast by ESPN3 and comes after two 1-point victories over New York so far this season and is the last time the teams will face each other in the regular season. New York will arrive in DC with a 5-4 record, 1-game behind the 7-4 Breeze and tied in the loss column.
Win or lose the Breeze will hold the head-to-head advantage over the Empire this year, but a loss Saturday would mean the Breeze would need to hope for another New York loss this season in order for the head-to-head tiebreaker to take effect. This game will be the AUDL/ESPN3 Game of the Week, marking the 2nd time this season the team will host a game of the week after no appearances last year. Please come out and support DC Ultimate and the DC Breeze, and show the nationwide viewing audience that we have a large and passionate Ultimate scene here in DC!
For our halftime break we’ll have our traditional Papa John’s Pizza giveaway contest followed by an out-of-the-ordinary disc-throwing show by world champions Scott Zimmerman and Jack Cooksey. Scott, who lives in McClean, dominated “overall” disc sports from 1979 through the 1980s, winning the men’s world overall championship title 8 out of 9 years. Jack, who lives in Richmond, holds numerous world championship titles in the individual events of distance throwing and and self-caught flight (SCF). Jack will demonstrate his world-class skills of launching, sprinting and then catching his own throws. He will also take several full-field attempts at throwing through the field goals. The show ends with a finale — a 3-minute freestyle Frisbee performance by Scott and Jack.
