Top Teams Converge in Delaware This Weekend for Shot At Club Nationals

The 2017 USA Ultimate Mid-Atlantic Club Regionals begin tomorrow morning in Milford, Delaware with coveted spots at October’s USAU Club Nationals on the line. All three divisions — Women’s, Mixed, and Men’s — are loaded with strong DC/Baltimore area teams, some names familiar and some new. To most players’ delight, Nationals will return to Florida for the first time in five years after being held there every year for a decade through 2012. The 2017 National Championships will take place in Sarasota October 19-22, while San Diego was selected as the host city for the 2018 and 2019 tournaments.

The majority of the 2017 Breeze roster, along with many players from previous seasons, can be found across the Mixed and Men’s rosters linked below, and the extremely talented DC/Baltimore area women fill the Mixed and Women’s rosters. Breeze Head Coach Darryl Stanley and Assistant Coach Will Smolinski took on their respective roles for top men’s team Truck Stop for the 2017 club season, while Breeze Technical Director Alex “Dutchy” Ghesquiere continues his longstanding role as head coach of top DC women’s club team Scandal. Former Breeze assistant and elite player Sarah Itoh remains with Scandal this season as a stalwart contributor on the field.

The USA Ultimate Mid-Atlantic Region consists of the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The region earned two Nationals bids for the Men’s division this year but only one each for Women’s and Mixed. Bid allocations change each year based on teams’ performances in tournaments throughout the club regular season, which has just concluded for 2017. It will be a battle in Delaware this weekend, albeit it likely good spirited because so many people have friends on various teams and, hey, it’s Ultimate after all. This weekend will mark the end of another fine club season for most… all but those on the four teams who move on to represent the Mid-Atlantic region in Sarasota next month. And those who can’t be there in person will be cheering them on from afar.
