First place was on the line at Hotchkiss Field on Sunday afternoon. Both teams knew it. Everyone in the stadium knew it. It just didn’t look like it. From the opening pull, the DC Breeze unleashed a dominating onslaught against the tired Toronto Rush.
It all comes down to this (kind of, but not really). During the off-season there were countless expectations for the DC Breeze and the New York Empire to contend with the four-time defending Eastern Division Champions. Until this season, the Toronto Rush had looked nearly unbeatable in the division, and surely unbeatable by any team south of the Canadian border.

The DC Breeze pulled away in the final minutes to beat the New York Empire yesterday, 28-25. The Empire (2-4) went on a 5-1 run late in the 3rd quarter to overcome a 19-15 deficit and tie the game at 21, but the Breeze (5-2) found another level of effort from that point and would not give up another break in the game.
The Breeze started off the 2017 season on a high-note, beating 4-time defending division champions Toronto Rush, 32-21. A few local photographers were on hand to document the game, capturing some incredible shots of the action. The Breeze completed their 2017 extended roster with the announcement of 14 additional players today. It’s a mix of young and veteran talent including one 18-year old still in high school (Malks) and two who return to the Breeze after very successful 2014 campaigns followed by a 2-year hiatus (Solis and Nam).
