Inspired by National Girls and Women in Sports day, this profile is part of a series highlighting local women’s college ultimate teams.
Extinction, the Women’s Ultimate Club Team at George Mason University, is headed into the competitive college season with something to prove.
The Extinction program began in the Fall of 2011 with barely enough ladies to call a team. They are now entering into Spring 2017 with a roster of 23 dedicated, scrappy athletes. According to their captains, “we put a lot of importance on learning the fundamentals of the sport, but aim to be competitive in our Section and Region and are proud to have a solid 2016 Regionals showing to build upon.”
Notable George Mason Ultimate alumnae include Breeze assistant coach and star Scandal player Sarah Itoh. Sarah Burden, who currently captains Extinction, also serves as the Breeze’s current social media intern.
Extinction’s spring 2017 schedule starts in late February with the Commonwealth Cup in Axton, Virginia. They’ll travel as far afield as Tallahasse, Florida in March, before they rush back to play in the Women’s Showcase Game on March 19th.
