Breeze Beat NY 22-21, Take Lead In AUDL East

The DC Breeze beat the New York Empire Saturday night, May 6 at Gallaudet University in another down-to-the wire finish between two of the top teams in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). The 22-21 final score marked the fifth victory in a row for the Breeze over their biggest rival, with four of those five games decided by just 1 point including two double overtimes. Last night’s victory put the Breeze in early command of the AUDL’s East Division with a 3-1 record, while the other two likely contenders (New York Empire and Toronto Rush) each have two losses.

The Breeze’s Alan Kolick (#99) continued his hot start to the season, controlling the Breeze offense with artful handling and receiving skills on the way to 34/34 passing completions, 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 blocks on the night. The Arlington native leads the team with 16 assists for the season to go along with 9 goals. Chuck Cantone (#84), who played for league’s Montréal Royal in 2014 before coming to the Breeze, led the team last night in scoring with 3 goals, 3 assists, and a block.

The Breeze will next head north of the border May 13 to face four-time defending division champions Toronto Rush before returning home to face the Royal Saturday, May 20 at 6:30pm at Gallaudet. The Breeze beat the Rush 32-21 in DC’s home opener on April 9, while the May 20 game against the Royal will be the first 2017 meeting between the two squads.
