There are a lot of parallels between the 2017 DC Breeze squad and the one from 2016. In addition to having the same record and ending the season in a similar fashion, the team scored virtually the same number of goals. D.C. had 392 this past season and 396 in 2016, a franchise high.
During a season in which consistency from week-to-week was one of the biggest issues for the DC Breeze, one player was a permanent fixture on the roster. AUDL Rookie David Bloodgood has been awarded as the Breeze’s only recipient of the AUDL’s Steel Spirit Award for the 2017 season for appearing in every regular season game.
Only one team in the East Division won their season series against the DC Breeze during the 2017 campaign. The Montréal Royal bested the Breeze by a one-goal margin after both teams won their home contest. In fact, that one loss in Montréal ended up being the determining factor for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Throughout the 2017 DC Breeze season it seemed that offensive consistency was the theme for the team and the highlight of most contests. If the offense played well the team would walk away with a victory, and it often did just that. However, the full season statistics may tell a different story.
There are not even a handful of players to ever hold up the AUDL MVP award in the league’s five year history. In fact, of those five seasons only three recipients have taken home the award. For the first time in franchise history, the DC Breeze have finished a regular season with a perfect home record. It is not unheard of for AUDL teams to go undefeated in front of their home crowd, a feat often reserved for those destined for top playoff seeds in the respective divisions.
One point may be a difference maker when this season is all said and done for the DC Breeze. No, not one point that a player gets injured. Not one point that decided the game, perhaps not even the double overtime point over the New York Empire.
The DC Breeze faced a daunting task heading into the weekend: two crunch-time games on a long road trip to Canada. Despite a strong Sunday win to show for the weekend’s efforts, there is still a bit of saltiness for the team as they return home 1-1 instead of 2-0.
