The DC Breeze pulled away in the final minutes to beat the New York Empire yesterday, 28-25. The Empire (2-4) went on a 5-1 run late in the 3rd quarter to overcome a 19-15 deficit and tie the game at 21, but the Breeze (5-2) found another level of effort from that point and would not give up another break in the game.
Getting back in winning form was key for the D.C. Breeze over the weekend. With the 23-20 win over the Montreal Royal, the Breeze are now in a tie with the Toronto Rush for first in the East. For the fifth consecutive year, local Washington, DC players will lead an Ultimate Frisbee clinic in Panama City, Panama. On the last Friday of 2016, the DC area Ultimate community congregated in Chantilly, Virginia for the Northern VA Indoor Ultimate Championships. 14 teams attended, representing all ages and geographic areas: there were multiple teams of High School players from Arlington, a team from Fairfax, a team composed of many University of Maryland alums, and a team with many Baltimore club players.
The DC Breeze announced today that defensive cutter Matthew “Rowan” McDonnell will return to the Breeze roster for the 2017 season. Over the course of the 2016 season, McDonnell played an astonishing 336 points and scored 21 goals for the Breeze. He also captained the 2016 squad along with Brad Scott and Nicky Spiva.
