Scott Abraham of Washington’s ABC affiliate WJLA/ABC7 released the latest installment in his Rising Stars series Tuesday. Airing during the 4pm newscast, the story featured several Breeze players and coaches with Summer camp kids at Fort Stanton Recreation Center in Southeast DC.
Abraham’s series typically features athletes who have persevered through adversity to excel in sports, but this time the story was about the DC Ultimate Community and Breeze players who dedicate their own time and effort to work with youth of all income levels and ethnicities in the DC area to have a great time and teach them our great sport.
Rowan McDonnell (pictured above), Matt Kerrigan, Chuck Cantone, Brad Scott, Nico Lake, Ben Scharadin and coach Mike LoPresti all made it out to Fort Stanton over a few days in July to spend time with the kids. The campers all got a Breeze disc and a ticket to the July 16th playoff game, and the DC Department of Parks & Recreation graciously provided a free shuttle bus to get all the kids over to the game, where they not only got to see the Breeze beat New York, but they also heard the D.C. Mayor speak and even mention their clinics before the game. The Breeze and DCPR hope to grow this initiative to several other recreation centers as early as next Spring.
