On the last Friday of 2016, the DC area Ultimate community congregated in Chantilly, Virginia for the Northern VA Indoor Ultimate Championships. 14 teams attended, representing all ages and geographic areas: there were multiple teams of High School players from Arlington, a team from Fairfax, a team composed of many University of Maryland alums, and a team with many Baltimore club players.

Here are the Top 10 Breeze players in Defense during the 2016 season. Determining each player’s impact through metrics alone paints a limited picture of the season to say the least. However, measuring a player’s — and team’s — overall defensive impact is in part a numbers game.
Breeze handler Alan Kolick broke his arm while playing for his club team DC Truck Stop at the USAU Club National Championships in Rockford, IL over the weekend.

Three head-to-head games, two 1-point margins, one 2OT result, a 75-72 Breeze lead in overall goals scored, and a 2-1 win-loss advantage for the Rush. That was the regular season. And that 2-1 advantage was the difference between a home Division Title game for the Breeze and another brutal road game in Toronto.
Somewhere under the rainbow last Saturday night the Breeze found what it took to secure their first playoff win in franchise history, prevailing 24-20 over the talented and determined New York Empire at Gallaudet University in DC.

Big congratulations go out to all the USA Teams at the WUGC World Championships, as U.S. teams swept the Gold Medals in Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, and Men’s and also Women’s Masters. Breeze Head Coach Alex Ghesquiere along with Tom Doi, Goose Helton and Alan Kolick were all part of the Men’s team, while Assistant Coach Sarah Itoh, Brett Matzuka and Nicky Spiva were all part of the Mixed team.
