Wind can be an ultimate players best friend or worst enemy. Both the Club Young Alums and College All-Stars found a way to work with the breezy weather and put on a great game for an engaged and energetic crowd at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA. Although the final score of 15-5 may say otherwise, the Alums and the All-Stars battled back and forth all game.

The Alums quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the play of Backhanded’s Catherine Reeves, who grabbed an early goal. The All-Stars had some trouble dealing with the Alums’ early zone looks. The wind certainly helped make things difficult for the All-Star’s handlers. The All-Stars, however, got one back with a couple of deep throws from Towson’s Kara Schulden. Scandal’s Amy Zhou kept up the intensity on defense with an impressive layout D and the rest of the Alums kept their foot on the gas and cruised into half at 8-1.

The All-Stars came out of half strong, scoring on a beautiful huck from Catholic’s Laurel Van Scoy to George Mason’s Emma Powers, who bolted deep off the pull. Georgetown’s Lauren Allen also got involved in the scoring as both teams traded points. The Alums didn’t let the All-Stars get too much closer. They added a goal on an amazing layout grab by Grit’s Libby Chamberlin and continued to put on the pressure. The All-Stars managed to keep play going with another Powers goal on game point. However, the Alums were too strong, finishing with a 15-5 victory.

Players from both teams had boisterous support in the crowd from college and club teammates. Parents and friends came from all over the DMV area to show their support for the players on the field, as well as the teams that they were representing. The game served as a fundraiser for the college and club teams participating. While numbers are not finalized, we expect the event raise significant funds for women in ultimate in DC. Fulcrum Media Group was also onsite filming the afternoon’s festivities; game footage and highlight reels are coming soon!
